I returned to Dumps after more than a year to find a wonderful surprise, two very unusual Saddleback Butterflyfish. While found in large numbers in other islands it is very rare here in Maui, what makes them even more beautiful. Enjoy the gallery.

A few weeks ago I was part of a Maui Camera Club outing where we had the chance to participate and photorgraph the magnificent work the people of the Auwahi Dry Forest Reserve Reforestation Project are doing.

It is absolutely unreal. The Auwahi Dry Forest is one of Hawai’i's most endangered areas. A very limited staff and a generous group of volunteers have been joining efforts and working hard to recreate this dying paradise, and they are succeeding !!!

The last few surviving trees were not giving seeds so there was no new generations coming. The cycle of life was interrupted. The whole ecosystem had to be recreated, from its very foundation, the soil. They seed grass that later turns into soil rich of nutrients. They remove all invasive species, animals are kept outside by a fence. And finally native plants and trees are planted. Then Nature takes care of the rest.

Take a virtual tour of the reserve and hopefully you’ll feel motivated, contact the Leeward Haleakala Watershed Restoration Partnership and Maui Restoration Group, (808) 573-8989 by email to auwahi@yahoo.com

Big Mahalos to Diana, Erica, Keahi, Luke, Ka’ai, Fernando, Ainoa, Alesa, and Andrea for such a good job and excellent example.

By the way, planting a tree with your own hands is an experience on its own !!!

Muchisimas gracias a Diana, Erica, Keahi, Luke, Ka’ai, Fernando, Ainoa, Alesa, y Andrea por tan buen trabajo y tan lindo ejemplo.

Exhibit at the Kahului Airport

2008-11-30

English

As a member of the Maui Camera Club I have been invited to show some of my work in an exhibition that will be held in the halls of the Kahului Airport from December to March. The theme is Water.

For this purpose I prepared four high quality pieces that are available as fine art and ready to print in any size and surface of your choice, including the large 20×30 and canvas, with the excellent archival quality MPIX is known to offer.

The first one from the left is an underwater panorama of the Saint Anthony shipwreck composed out of two separate images digitally merged. Three images of divers alone in the immensity and desolation of the depths complete the scene adding a sense of risk, adventure, exploration and discovery. The color has been post processed to add a feeling of mistery, latent danger, awareness. The title is “Deeper Feelings”. I  recommend the choice of metalic paper for this image.

The second is called “Mistic Forest” and was taken at the Poli Poli Forest Reserve. This dense and fantastic forest sits up on the sides of the Haleakala right at the same altitude clouds are. They cover the forest in a mist of magic where fairies are known to come out and play.

The third image is called “Purify …” and is an abstract captured from a large and old chain that after being submerged in the water for several decades has developed a thick growth of colorful corals and sponges. Water as a source of life washing off the toxins and providing the nutrients necessary for life to succeed. The sun is also present through bright reflections reminding us he is the power making everything possible.

The last one is “Endangered Eyes”. What can I say that hasn’t been said already. Just save something and stop making damage. That’s all it takes from each of us. Water is life and home for others too. Stop polluting it. These eyes are desperate, their days are counted and they know it.

I hope you enjoy them, and if you happen to travel in the following months, don’t miss this exhibit with some of the best images of Maui’s most talented photographers.

11/28/2008 – Dive at Airport Beach

2008-11-30

English

Very nice dive at Airport Beach.

I haven’t been here in over a year. I didn’t have a plan, as usual, but Robin tempted me right away suggesting to go beyond the Halimeda fields in search for some coral outcrops isolated along the extense sandy bottom. This means a long swim far out and into the deep, my kind of girl !

Several minutes later and 90 feet deep we found an incredible rock full of life where we encountered some of Hawai’i's most wanted. Click on the image to see the the album. Enjoy !

2008/10/25 – Dive at Pu’u Olai

2008-11-02

It was a fun dive heading out into the open sandy bottom and the fields of Halimeda. I had to fight a very strong current that forced me to swimm constantly in order to keep my position. I don’t like holding onto anything, NO TOUCH ! So it was very hard to take a steady shot. Several interesting encounters though:

A Wirecoral Goby sitting on top of a metal rod that he chose for home.

A giant Horned Helmet the size of my head resting and guarding her eggs.

And a Wingless Box Crab taken by surprise while paying a quick visit to a big Leopard Cone. As soon as he saw me he did what he does better, dive into the sand !

Click on the photo above or HERE to see the album.

Princess Ka’iulani Festival, Keokea, Maui, 2008

2008-10-30

Last Saturday, October 18th, the “Isle of Maui Pipe Band” commemorated the memory of one of Hawai’i's most revered royals with the first Princess Ka’iulani Festival at the St. John’s Episcopal Church, Keokea, Maui. This inaugural festival included exhibits and events by local groups and historians, representative of the Princesses’ bi-cultural heritage.

1011 12 13

The Crown Princess Victoria Kawekui Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Ka’iulani Cleghorn was revered by the Hawaiian people as a symbol of hope, an heir-apparent who embraced cultural diversity and encouraged the unity of cultures. Born on the sixteenth of October, 1875 on the island of O’ahu, Princess Ka’iulani was the only child of a Scotsman, Archibald Scott Cleghorn and Princess Miriam Likelike. She inherited her royal lineage from her mother, the youngest sister of His Magesty King David La’amea Kalakua and was later named heir to the throne of the Hawaiian Kingdom by her aunt, the reigning Queen Lili’uokalani.

9

The Hawai’i State Senate, represented by Senator J.Kalani English, has honored the efforts of the Isle of Maui Pipe Band in presenting this historic festival to the residents of Maui. The festival provided an opportunity to commemorate the life of the beloved Princess, celebrate Hawai’i's unique ethnic diversity, and promote cultural harmony throughout the Maui community.

It was a very refreshing day with lots of fun inmersed in the most friendly athmosphere and great performances by:

1

Isle of Maui Pipe Band

4

Lisa Gomes and Peter Della Croce

6

Hula dancers of Halau Hula Wehiwehi O Leilehua

2

The incredible Princess Ka’iulani Fashion Show with the amazing historical review of the fashion in Hawai’i through an extraordinary collection of gawns

7

Richard Ho’opi’i

3

Tropical Harps

It was an excellent photographic oportunity in really challenging conditions but I am really happy with the results. As a show of appreciation to this wonderful community, I made all the images (Small size, low resolution) accessible for free HERE

The best selection is also available to order prints on-line HERE.

The organizers, models and performers might also be eligible to receive any high resolution image free of charge, simply contact me in private identifying yourself and how do you plan to use the image.

Big Mahalos to the Scottish community of maui for such a wonderful experience so full of love and aloha. Looking forward for the next edition.
