Last Saturday, October 18th, the “Isle of Maui Pipe Band” commemorated the memory of one of Hawai’i’s most revered royals with the first Princess Ka’iulani Festival at the St. John’s Episcopal Church, Keokea, Maui. This inaugural festival included exhibits and events by local groups and historians, representative of the Princesses’ bi-cultural heritage.

The Crown Princess Victoria Kawekui Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Ka’iulani Cleghorn was revered by the Hawaiian people as a symbol of hope, an heir-apparent who embraced cultural diversity and encouraged the unity of cultures. Born on the sixteenth of October, 1875 on the island of O’ahu, Princess Ka’iulani was the only child of a Scotsman, Archibald Scott Cleghorn and Princess Miriam Likelike. She inherited her royal lineage from her mother, the youngest sister of His Magesty King David La’amea Kalakua and was later named heir to the throne of the Hawaiian Kingdom by her aunt, the reigning Queen Lili’uokalani.

The Hawai’i State Senate, represented by Senator J.Kalani English, has honored the efforts of the Isle of Maui Pipe Band in presenting this historic festival to the residents of Maui. The festival provided an opportunity to commemorate the life of the beloved Princess, celebrate Hawai’i’s unique ethnic diversity, and promote cultural harmony throughout the Maui community.

Tango

Tango

Bum ….  Bum….  Bum….  Bum….

The Bandoneon commands the rhythm our hearts will start to beat at

Bam …. bam … bam … bam …

We look at each other and we hold in a frame full of questions and uncertainties…

One …. two … three … four …

And the flow of our blood warms up our spirits …

Five … six … seven … eight ….

And the world narrows down ’till it ceases to exist …

Bam ! … Bam ! ….

And our breaths fall in sync …

Bum ! … Bum ! …

And the pressure built up is ready to explode in all directions …

but not … not yet …

As the fiddle takes over with a sweet caress
faintly showing the shape of a doorway,

a way to let go …

And we go !

I invite and you follow

Uncertain road of discovery

Emotions and feelings

we never knew could exist

And you smile in acceptance

spreading open your tender wings

and we fuse and lift off ….

and we fly …. we fly !!!

Tango…

Magical energy reaching the deepest corners of my soul

Tango…

Mystical power forcing two to become one

Tango…

Rupturing my spirit in an overflow of emotions and feelings

exposing defenseless the nakedness of me

Tango !!!

Fire and Ice

Laugh and Tears

How will I ever know again what is real ?

Dreams and reality fused as one

just like you and I ….

Four notes … a bond indestructible ….

Three minutes … an eternity….
